Common Core State Standards

Professional Learning Community (PLC) Resources

A professional learning community (PLC) is a group of educators committed to working collaboratively to achieve better results for the students they serve. PLC’s will play a vital role as schools and districts endeavor to successfully transition to the Common Core State Standards. For institutions that are questioning how they will build awareness of the educational shifts required to be successful on the CCSS, a healthy PLC is likely the best answer. PLC’s are founded on the following three big ideas:

Big Idea 1 (Focus on Learning):

In PLC’s, educators demonstrate their commitment to helping all students learn by working collaboratively to address the following critical questions:

            1. What do we want students to learn?

            2. How will we know if they have learned it?

            3. What will we do if they don’t learn it?

            4. What will we do if they already know it?

Big Idea 2 (Build a Collaborative Culture):

·        Schools can’t succeed if teachers work in isolation.

·     Schools improve when teachers are given the time and support to work together to develop student achievement.

Big Idea 3 (Focus on Results):

All policies, programs, and practices are continually evaluated on the basis of their impact on student learning.

The following resources were developed with the goal of helping educators facilitate a PLC focused on successful implementation of the Common Core State Standards with a focus on English Language Arts (ELA).

3rd Grade Springboard

This document was created to assist classroom teachers and administrators as they endeavor to transition from teaching the CA state standards into teaching the Common Core standards. This document will allow you to easily identify which Common Core standard(s) correlate with the CA State Standard(s) that you are already teaching.

6

4th Grade Springboard

The following document was created to assist classroom teachers and administrators as they endeavor to transition from teaching the CA state standards into teaching the Common Core standards. This document will allow you to easily identify which Common Core standard(s) correlate with the CA State Standard(s) that you are already teaching.

CCSS Module Analysis Protocol

The purpose of this protocol is to help guide the process of creating and evaluating CCSS modules. Creators and evaluators of CCSS modules must remain cognizant of four questions:

(A) How does this module address the six instructional ELA shifts?

(B) How well do the tasks in this module align with SBAC tasks?

(C) Does this module have an appropriate balance of tasks at all four DOK levels?

(D) Which specific CCSS anchor standards are integrated into this module?

MATH

CCSS Overview PPT - Math

This will introduce the various components of CCSS, with a focus on Math. Big ideas include

·         Six Instructional Shifts

·         Standards For Mathematical Practice

· Next Generation Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC)

·         Webb’s Depth of Knowledge

CCSS and the spiraling staircase of complexity

Participant Notes

This document provides a convenient way for participants to take notes of key CCSS topics for math while navigating the math PowerPoint.

13

CCSS_CA’97

Math Comparison

This document will allow California teachers to take note of:

·   new math domains for their grade level within CCSS

·        new math concepts introduced by CCSS

·  concepts in both CCSS and CA’97 standards

·         CA’97 standards eliminated by CCSS

DEPTH OF KNOWLEDGE

14

Webb’s Depth of Knowledge

This table defines the four levels of rigor associated with Norman Webb’s Depth of Knowledge and gives performance example for each of the four levels. It also gives a “decision tree” which will help educators classify the levels of rigor associated with student tasks.

15

Webb’s DOK Web Alignment Tool

This tool from the University of Wisconsin helps educators easily classify and define the level of rigor associated with given tasks.

16

GATE Icons of Depth & Complexity PowerPoint

This PowerPoint provides an overview of the various icons of depth and complexity associated with Gifted and Talented Education (GATE). Integrating these icons will be the key to adding the levels of rigor required to be successful on the CCSS standards and assessments.

17

The Scholarly Pursuits PowerPoint

The use of the Scholarly Pursuits helps students see how their research project or report relates to what scholars in the field do. The Scholarly Pursuits are utilized by the teacher to help students be more self-directed.

18

Math Icons PowerPoint

Utilizing the GATE math icons will allow students to have a much deeper mathematical conceptual understanding which is required by CCSS standards and assessments.
