Common Core State Standards

Learning Modules & Instructional Tools

The Common Core will require educators to move beyond solely teaching individual skills in isolation and then using multiple-choice assessments. The demands of the Common Core necessitate students to apply knowledge and skills across multiple tasks and disciplines. A successful transition to the Common Core will require educators to make six instructional shifts for English-Language Arts and provide students opportunities to demonstrate a much greater depth of knowledge. The following learning modules and instructional tools are intended to assist educators meet these demands associated with the Common Core.

What is the difference between a “learning module” and an “instructional tool”? A learning module contains a stimulus, generally a passage or multiple passages, as well as assessment items that are designed to have students apply knowledge and skills at all four Depth of Knowledge (DOK) levels. An instructional tool doesn't contain a stimulus. Rather, it is a tool that is designed to add depth of knowledge to one of your existing stimuli.

Interdisciplinary reading and tasks are included for math, science, and history. The Houghton Mifflin science readers and other books associated with the water cycle and water resources can be easily integrated into the module.

Assessment items include selected response, constructed response, and performance tasks. Student tasks include items at DOK levels 1-4.

Expected time for completion would be about 5-10 days
